Alton is a market town with a story that runs deep into English history. Its streets still show traces of the Saxon settlement that first grew here, while Georgian townhouses, coaching inns, and a busy market square give it a character that has lasted through the centuries. Just outside the town lies Chawton, a village forever tied to Jane Austen. The author lived here with her mother and sister, revising the novels that made her name. Her brother, Edward, owned Chawton House, an Elizabethan manor that now houses a library and museum — and it is from the grounds of this house that balloon flights begin.

It makes for a memorable place to take off. The great house and gardens spread out beneath the basket as the balloon rises, and almost at once the view opens to the wider Hampshire countryside. To the south, the ridges of the South Downs lift against the horizon, chalk hills rolling eastwards towards Petersfield and beyond. To the west lies Winchester, once the capital of England, its cathedral tower sometimes glinting even from miles away.

On particularly clear days the view may stretch further. The New Forest can sometimes be seen to the south-west, its mosaics of heath and woodland forming a darker patchwork against the farmland. Closer to hand, church towers rise from villages, fields are patterned with hedgerows, and the quiet lanes of Hampshire trace their way through the countryside.

Every flight takes its own course. Some mornings the balloon drifts low, close enough to notice the detail of meadows and tracks. On other days the air carries you higher, until the Downs, the Forest, and the river valleys seem to run endlessly outwards. A launch from Chawton House is more than a view of Hampshire — it is a chance to see one of England’s most historic landscapes from above, beginning in a place forever linked with one of its most famous writers.
