Durham is a city that always seems bigger than it is. The cathedral and castle rise on their wooded hill, side by side, while the River Wear loops and doubles back in lazy bends below them. Walk through the centre and you’ll find steep cobbled streets, cafés full of students, and the quiet corners of a medieval university that has been here for centuries. It feels part market town, part living museum, but it never stands still.

Balloon flights launch just outside at Poplar Tree Garden Centre on Hall Lane, a calm spot among gardens and trees. The lift is gentle, and then suddenly Durham itself spreads beneath you. The cathedral dominates, its Norman towers unmistakable even from far off. The castle sits close beside it, the two buildings almost fused into one. The river winds through the gorge, green banks folding in and out of view, sometimes hidden by trees and then glinting silver when the light catches it.

Beyond the city the land changes quickly. Villages cluster around church spires, fields are stitched together by hedges and dry stone walls, and to the north the old colliery towns show another side of Durham’s story. Their pit wheels are gone, but the patterns of terraces and greened-over spoil heaps still mark the land. Look west on a clear day and you may glimpse the high ground of the North Pennines, pale against the sky. Eastward, the ground dips towards the coast, the North Sea sometimes faintly gleaming in the distance.

No two flights ever quite match. Sometimes the breeze takes you over the city itself, where bells might be ringing from the cathedral and the castle towers look close enough to touch. Other times you drift out into quieter countryside, where only the sound of the burners breaks the silence. However it unfolds, ballooning from Durham is less about chasing one landmark and more about seeing how history, river, and landscape all fit together — a view that only really makes sense from above.
