Kirkby Lonsdale is one of those towns that feels both tucked away and well-connected, a market settlement on the River Lune where three counties — Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire — press close together. Cobbled lanes and stone cottages climb the hillside above the water, while the marketplace hums with visitors heading for cafés, inns, and old shops. Just beyond the edge of town lies Devil’s Bridge, a graceful three-arched span that has stood since the Middle Ages. Legends say it was built with the devil’s help, though today it is better known as a meeting place for walkers, bikers, and day-trippers who come to admire its setting.

Balloon flights launch from fields near the bridge, with the sound of the river below and wooded banks rising on either side. On other days you might drift north, where the Howgill Fells rise in smooth, whale-backed slopes, or east into the Dales, where rivers cut deep valleys through the hills.
