Cullompton sits in mid-Devon, a market town on the River Culm with a long history of wool trade and farming. Exeter itself holds surprises. Beneath its streets runs a network of medieval tunnels, dug in the 14th century to carry spring water into the city — the only system of its kind in Britain. Depending on the wind, balloons from Cullompton may drift south towards the city, giving you a rare view of its blend of history and modern life.

Turn west and the wild granite ridges of Dartmoor soon appear, broken by tors and heathered valleys. To the north lies Exmoor, with its high moorland plateaus and wooded combes running down to the Bristol Channel. Between them, the farmland of mid-Devon stretches out in a patchwork of hedges, lanes and villages, every field changing colour with the season.

Alternatively if your balloon floats in a north-easterly direction you can follow the River Culm and see some of the local area history when the 175 year old Coldharbour Mill drifts into view. It is still working today but mostly operates as a museum showcasing how high quality yarn is produced on its period machinery.

Each flight from Cullompton has its own character. Some days the balloon skims low, close enough to notice church spires and winding rivers. Other days the wind lifts you higher, revealing both moors at once, with views that can reach as far as the coast. What remains constant is the quiet wonder of seeing Devon from above, its mix of wild upland and gentle farmland set out in every direction.
