Oswestry is a market town with one foot in England and the other brushing against Wales. Its story runs deep — the Iron Age hillfort of Old Oswestry still crowns the landscape just north of the town, one of the best-preserved in Britain. Legend even links it with the birth of Queen Guinevere of Arthurian tale. Centuries later, the town became home to poet Wilfred Owen, who trained here before heading to the trenches of the First World War. Today Oswestry is lively and rooted in its borderland character, with markets, music, and both English and Welsh influences at every turn.

Balloon flights launch from Sweeney Hall in the village of Morda, a mile or two south of the town. The hall’s gardens and wooded grounds make a tranquil spot to lift away from the earth. Almost at once, the view expands to take in the rolling countryside of north Shropshire. To the west, the border hills of Wales rise into view, with peaks like Gyrn Moelfre often standing clear against the skyline. The Llanymynech Rocks nature reserve, straddling the border, is another striking landmark when seen from above — cliffs and quarries now softened by trees.

To the north lies Oswestry itself, its streets and market squares soon reduced to a neat pattern of roofs and lanes. Beyond, the Chirk Aqueduct sometimes appears, an elegant 19th-century structure that carries canal boats across the valley into Wales. Eastward, the land flattens into farmland, fields divided by hedgerows and scattered with small villages.

Every flight is shaped by the breeze. Some days the balloon drifts low, close enough to follow the curves of rivers and lanes. On other mornings the air carries you higher, until the English lowlands and Welsh hills meet in a broad sweep of horizon. From Oswestry, ballooning captures the sense of being between two countries — a shifting view of castles, hills, and fields, tied together by the calm drift of the wind.
