Tissington is a village that seems lifted straight from a storybook. Stone cottages line the green, a grand hall watches over the church, and wells still run clear through the lanes — decorated each spring in the centuries-old tradition of well-dressing. Set in the White Peak, it has long been a favourite stop for walkers and travellers, a place where time feels slower and the hills begin to fold and rise all around. From here, balloon flights launch from the wide open green, with the limestone dales of Derbyshire waiting in every direction.

The village itself rests on ancient foundations. Over 360 million years ago this part of the Peak District wasn’t hills at all but a shallow sea, full of coral reefs and tiny sea creatures settling into the sand. What’s left of them hardened into limestone, and it’s that same stone that shapes the dales and ridges around Tissington today. From a balloon basket you can see how it all fits together: walls running like stitching across the fields, hedges marking lines that have stood for centuries, meadows tucked into hollows, and wooded slopes catching the morning light.

Eastwards, the ground suddenly falls away into Dovedale. The River Dove threads its way through the cliffs there, curling round bends and over the famous stepping stones. From above, it looks almost too delicate, a silver ribbon between green hills, sometimes hidden by trees and then shining again when the sun catches it. To the west, the broad waters of Carsington spread wide, and further still the countryside rolls towards Matlock and beyond. Stately houses also lie scattered in the wider view — Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall — their turrets and gardens sometimes appearing from the air depending on the breeze.

Every flight from Tissington is different. Some mornings the wind drifts you low across dale and meadow, close enough to notice a farm track or a church tower half-hidden by trees. Other days you rise higher and the White Peak’s ridges seem endless, stretching away in soft grey lines.
