Swindon grew from a railway town into a major centre of the Great Western Railway, and its heritage still lingers in the brick terraces, workshops, and the Steam Museum. Today it’s a mix of old and new — Victorian streets alongside modern housing estates and business parks — but at its western edge, Lydiard Park offers a green escape. The park surrounds an 18th-century stately home and spreads across lakes, meadows, and avenues of trees, making it an atmospheric place to begin a flight.

Balloon launches from Lydiard Park quickly show the town in context. To the east, the built-up spread of Swindon unfolds, with its roads and rooftops fanning out into the distance. To the west, the view changes almost at once: fields, hedgerows, and villages stretching towards the border with Somerset and the distant rise of the Cotswolds.

Depending on the wind, you might drift south towards the chalk ridges of the North Wessex Downs AONB, their white scars and sweeping curves clearly visible on bright days. A breeze to the north can bring the Thames Valley into view, where the river begins its long journey east. Clear mornings sometimes reveal Bristol’s outline far to the west, or the faint line of the Severn.

Every flight is different. Sometimes the balloon lingers low, gliding over the lakes and lawns of Lydiard itself, where you can pick out the hall and its gardens in detail. On other days you rise high enough for the whole of Swindon and the Wiltshire countryside to look like a map beneath you. However it unfolds, a balloon ride here balances town and country, heritage and landscape — a new way of seeing a place long known for its railway roots and wide horizons.
