Bishop Auckland sits at the meeting of rivers and roads in the south of County Durham, a town shaped by centuries of history. At its heart is Auckland Castle, once the palace of the Prince Bishops, who ruled this part of England with both spiritual and political power. Around it the town grew with markets, mining, and more recently new life in its streets and galleries. Just outside, the countryside quickly takes over — a landscape of wooded valleys, castles, and quiet villages.

Balloon flights launch from Witton Castle Country Park at Witton-le-Wear, only a short drive from Bishop Auckland. The castle itself, a fortified manor with medieval roots, makes a dramatic starting point, its stone walls surrounded by lawns and trees. From here the balloon lifts steadily, and almost at once the horizon opens. Raby Castle often appears in the middle distance, a vast medieval stronghold set among fields and deer park. Southwards, the wide landscape sometimes carries as far as the moors of North Yorkshire.

Each flight here is different. Some days you float quietly above the Wear Valley, where rivers, woods, and villages pass slowly beneath. On other days the breeze lifts you higher, until the horizon is a ring of hills and castles in every direction.
