Thetford is a historic market town shaped by rivers, forests and the wide, open landscapes of Breckland. Its story reaches back through Saxon and medieval England, when it grew into an important settlement beside the River Little Ouse. Remains of old earthworks, churches and the ruins of Thetford Priory still hint at that long past, while the town is also remembered for its connection with Dad’s Army, much of which was filmed in and around Thetford. Beyond the streets, woodland and heath begin to take over, giving the town a setting unlike anywhere else in Norfolk.

Balloon flights launch from Thetford Rugby Club, a sheltered site close to Thetford Forest and the wider Breckland landscape. As the balloon lifts away, the town and rugby grounds soon give way to a broad sweep of treetops, fields and pale stretches of heath. The forest canopy forms great blocks of green beneath the basket, crossed by narrow tracks and clearings, while the surrounding farmland breaks the landscape into softer patterns of hedges and fields.

Depending on the wind, the balloon may drift across Thetford Forest or follow the countryside towards the Norfolk–Suffolk border. The River Little Ouse winds through this landscape, marking part of the historic boundary between the two counties. From above, its bends can appear between woods and meadows, sometimes catching the early morning light. The wider Breckland area is known for its dry, sandy soils, old “breck” farming fields and unusual mix of forest, heath and open countryside. It is also an important habitat for wildlife, with large areas protected for their scientific and natural interest.

Every flight reveals something different. On one morning, the balloon may remain low enough to pick out tracks through the forest and clearings among the trees. On another, it may climb higher, where the woodland becomes part of a much wider panorama stretching across Norfolk and into Suffolk. The changing height, light and wind make each journey unpredictable, but the contrast between forest, river and open Breckland countryside ensures there is always something new to see.
