Okehampton sits at the gateway to Dartmoor, a town long associated with the wild granite uplands that dominate this part of Devon. In 1951 Dartmoor became one of Britain’s first designated national parks, and to this day it holds the largest concentration of prehistoric stone rows in the world — with Stallmoor, the longest, stretching more than three kilometres across the moor. From the fields at Sourton Cross Picnic Area, hot air balloons lift directly into this remarkable landscape.

The launch is unforgettable. As the balloon rises, the patchwork of farmland falls away and the moor takes centre stage. Broad ridges run to the horizon, broken by granite tors and scattered valleys where rivers thread their way through the heather. On clear mornings you may pick out Yes Tor and High Willhays, the two highest points on Dartmoor and the highest ground anywhere south of the Brecon Beacons.

Drifting across Dartmoor is like seeing a different England — one of openness, light and ancient character. Here and there, groups of standing stones appear, reminders of lives lived thousands of years ago. More often it is the Dartmoor ponies that catch the eye, roaming semi-wild in small herds across the uplands, their presence a symbol of the moor itself.

Turn north and the view softens into wooded valleys and farmland. New England Wood is one of many green pockets that show how varied Devon can be, and on the very clearest days the line of the distant coast sometimes shimmers at the edge of the view.

Every flight is guided by the wind, which means no two journeys are ever the same. Some carry you deep into the moorland heart, others towards the rolling countryside of north Devon, but all share the same sense of space and discovery.
