Enjoy Stunning Views Ballooning Over Ludlow

Ludlow is a town that wears its history proudly. Nearly 500 listed buildings stand within its streets, from timber-framed Tudor houses to medieval stonework, and Ludlow Castle still crowns the bluff above the River Teme. The town has been called “probably the loveliest in England” by Sir John Betjeman, and from the air that loveliness is hard to miss — red roofs clustered tightly together, church spires rising above them, and lanes that wind into the countryside beyond.

Balloon flights here launch from Stokesay Court, a late-Victorian mansion just north of Ludlow, made famous as the filming location for the film Atonement. Its sweeping lawns and woodlands make a fittingly grand place to rise into the sky. As the basket lifts, the view opens wide. To the north and west lie the Shropshire Hills, a landscape so rich and varied it was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge, and the ridges of Brown Clee and Titterstone Clee often appear on the horizon, their shapes familiar to walkers and riders below.

On the right breeze, the balloon may carry you directly over Ludlow itself. From above, the medieval street plan is clear: the castle, the market square, and the great church of St Laurence all set against a backdrop of winding lanes and half-timbered houses. Drift further south and the land changes again, merging into the quiet farmland of Herefordshire, where patchwork fields and apple orchards spread out beneath you.

Every flight from Ludlow is different. Sometimes you float low, close enough to see the detail of farms, woods, and riversides. On other days the air lifts you higher, until the Marches landscape rolls on for miles, blurred only by distance. Whether over castle or hill, village or field, ballooning here shows why south Shropshire has long been considered one of England’s most beautiful corners.
