Sheffield has always been shaped by its setting. Built where rivers from the surrounding hills meet, it grew into a city of steel and cutlery, its valleys once filled with furnaces and forges. Today the industry has quietened, but the city remains defined by contrast: a centre of universities, galleries, and music venues set against a backdrop of wooded hillsides and moorland ridges. From above, it’s clear how close the city runs to the countryside, with the streets thinning almost immediately into green slopes.

Balloon flights launch from Bowshaw Showground on the city’s southern edge. Lift-off here offers two different views at once. To the north the skyline of Sheffield spreads out, with tower blocks, churches, and old industrial quarters threaded together by the River Don. To the west the land changes quickly into the Peak District National Park — a sweep of ridges, gritstone edges, and open moorland that dominates the horizon.

Depending on the breeze, the balloon may drift over the city itself, where you can pick out landmarks like Sheffield Cathedral or the grounds of Bramall Lane. On other days you might be carried out over the edges of the Peaks, where villages sit tight in valleys and reservoirs glint between the hills. Clear mornings sometimes reveal the long spine of Kinder Scout to the west, or even the faint line of the Pennines beyond.

Flights here never follow the same course twice. Some evenings the basket floats low, close enough to see the patchwork of parks and housing estates that ring the suburbs. Other mornings the air carries you high, where the whole city is a cluster at the edge of wide, wild country.
