Enjoy Stunning Views Ballooning Over Leeds

Leeds is a city of contrasts. Once built on wool, engineering, and heavy industry, it’s now known just as much for its universities, shopping arcades, and thriving cultural life. Victorian mills stand beside glass towers, and the River Aire still cuts through the centre on its way east. To the west the streets run thick and urban, while to the east the city gives way quickly to farmland, woods, and the quieter towns of West Yorkshire.

Balloon flights launch from the grounds of Lotherton Hall, just outside Aberford on the city’s edge. The hall itself, with its gardens and parkland, is easy to spot as the balloon rises, and within minutes the view spreads out on both sides: the built-up sweep of Leeds to the west, and open countryside stretching away to the east.

Where the breeze takes you is never certain. Drift south and you may trace the line of the River Aire and the old Aire and Calder Navigation, once a key artery of the industrial north. To the east the land softens into a patchwork of woods, fields, and villages, with Castleford not far off and, on very clear days, distant glimpses of the Humber or even the North Sea. A turn to the north might bring in the rolling farmland towards Wetherby and beyond, dotted with church towers and market towns.

Flights here vary as much as the winds. Sometimes you stay low, close enough to see field boundaries, lanes, and roof tiles glinting in the light. Other days you rise high, with Leeds itself spread out like a map and the Pennine hills a dark line far to the west. However it unfolds, a balloon ride from Leeds shows the city and its countryside in a new way — steady, quiet, and always a surprise.
