Bakewell is the kind of town that seems made for postcards. Stone cottages and Georgian houses gather along the River Wye, where ducks drift under the arched bridge and market stalls set up in the square each Monday. It is a place with deep roots — recorded in the Domesday Book — yet best known today for its sweet culinary export. The Bakewell pudding, and its better-known cousin the Bakewell tart, are said to have been created here in 1820 when a cook misread a recipe. What could have been a mistake became a dessert that travelled far beyond Derbyshire, though nowhere does it taste quite the same as it does here.

Balloon flights lift off from Bakewell Showground, a wide open space on the edge of town. As the basket rises, the countryside quickly unfolds into a panorama of dales, ridges, and winding rivers. To the south lies Haddon Hall, its medieval halls and gardens tucked into the valley, while to the east the grounds of Chatsworth spread out in stately grandeur. The Wye itself curves through the town, glinting as it threads between fields and woodland.

The direction of the wind shapes every flight. Drift north and you may pass over limestone villages, green pasture, and the high ground of the White Peak. Eastwards, the land begins to roll towards Matlock and Chesterfield, with the crooked spire of St Mary’s Church sometimes visible on the horizon. Westwards, Buxton and the High Peak offer a more rugged backdrop, while on very clear days the skylines of Sheffield or Nottingham appear faint and distant.

No two journeys from Bakewell are the same, but each carries the quiet rhythm of ballooning — the steady drift of the basket, the hush between bursts of flame, the landscape shifting gently below. From pudding and market square to parkland and Peak, this is a launch site that shows Derbyshire in all its variety.
